There are a number of different avenues to take to land a position at a cancer research facility. The staff that conducts clinical trials, gene and biological testing, and drug therapy protocols are varied and include jobs for professionals with varying degrees of education, experience and certifications.
Step 1
Apply for a fellowship or internship at a cancer research facility. Organizations such as the Center for Cancer Research offer training positions to post doctorate students, master's interns and summer school students. Students use these opportunities to form relationships and apply for positions once they come open.
Step 2
Take courses offered at a research facility that collaborates with university programs. The National Cancer Institute partners with Johns Hopkins University for example, to teach a biotechnology course. Take the time to learn about the inner workings of the organization and leverage contacts made through your course of study to land an interview following graduation.
Step 3
Attend job fairs and talk to recruiters. You may find an opening that you hadn't considered that could help to get your foot in the door. Organizations such as the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center regularly have tables at conventions like the NAACP National Convention and Diversity Job Fair. Watch for recruiters on campus as well.
Step 4
Utilize a network of instructors, colleagues and doctors in the field of cancer research that you've developed throughout your studies. Participate in trade groups and industry associations to build a base of contacts that can be called on when you find a position. Groups such as the American Association for Cancer Research hold conferences, seminars and networking events where those seeking employment opportunities can meet with leaders in the field.
Step 5
Volunteer at a cancer research facility to meet hiring managers and learn more about the organization. Centers that treat patients and conduct clinical trials are especially in need of volunteers to work with families and provide moral support to cancer patients. Work on a phone bank or participate in a fundraiser for a facility to build an internal network at the facility.
Tip
Always keep your resume updated with every new experience, including volunteer positions and internships.
Warning
Look for opportunities to learn and to help others when volunteering. Don't let the staff think that the only reason you are there is to get an inside track on job openings. Use the time to let them see your passion for the patients and your sincere desire to make an impact in the field of research.
