Giving pneumococcal vaccine to young children can also help reduce rates of serious pneumococcal infections -- including pneumonia -- in older adults. Since the introduction of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-7) for babies and toddlers in 2000, the rate of invasive pneumococcal disease in adults over age 50 decreased by 28 percent, according to a study in the Oct. 26 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
