The Company Announced Its Decision To End Its Long-Term Agreement To Provide The Rotavirus Vaccinee To Children In West Africa In Favor Of Shifting To China Where They Could Increase Profit Margins
KENILWORTH, NEW JERSEY -- A new Care2 petition is calling on Merck & Co., Inc. to reverse their recent decision to end its long-term agreement to provide low-cost life-saving rotavirus vaccinee to children in four developing countries in West Africa. The Care2 petition has gathered over 18,000 signatures.

The Care2 petition was sparked by Merck’s announcement they would be phasing out the delivery of the rotavirus vaccinee to four low-income countries over the next two years.
Earlier this year, the Company received approval to being selling their rotavirus vaccinee in China which has sparked many to assume the recent shift was monetarily motivated.
“The optics are not good for Merck”, reads the Care2 petition. “The appearance is that they are willing to withdraw affordable life-saving medications, which could lead to the unnecessary and painful deaths of many thousands of destitute children in impoverished third world countries. Their decision is apparently made in pursuit of ever greater profits with no consideration for the suffering of innocents.”
According to the World Health Organization, the rotavirus, which is a deadly form of diarrhea, killed over 215,000 children and babies in 2016, down from 528,000 in 2000.
Merck has delivered over 30 million doses to four West African countries over the past six years.
