Breakthrough Strategy Leads International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis Global Venous Thrombosis Research Project

Breakthrough Strategy (BTS), working on behalf of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), will lead an international project to develop venous thromboembolism (VTE) clinical research standards beginning in December 2018.

ELLICOTT CITY, Md., /PRNewswire/ -- Breakthrough Strategy (BTS), working on behalf of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), will lead an international project to develop venous thromboembolism (VTE) clinical research standards beginning in December 2018.

BTS will lead a team of researchers in the design of a minimum standard data set to be used in VTE research studies. The data set, to be completed in 2019, will simplify the process of identifying core data elements used VTE research studies, and support cross-study comparisons and collaboration using agreed-upon standards. BTS and ISTH plan to submit the final data set to one or more clinical research standards organizations, to be considered for endorsement as an international research standard.

“BTS is thrilled to work with ISTH to develop consistent VTE research standards,” said Sam Walters, BTS Founder and President. “Consensus-based data sets are key to powering collaborative healthcare research, increasing the power and magnitude of future VTE clinical research projects globally.”

Venous thromboembolism (also known as deep vein thrombosis) is a condition in which blood clots form in leg, groin, or arms. These clots can travel to the lungs, resulting in pulmonary embolism (PE), a life-threatening condition. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as many as 900,000 people are affected by VTE and PE per year in the United States. While VTE can occur at any age, it is most common in adults over 60 years of age. Risk for VTE is highest post-surgery, or in individuals with heart failure, cancer, or heart attack.
