Company officials announced Tuesday plans by Bayer HealthCare to add an undetermined number of new jobs to its animal health manufacturing plant in St. Joseph. The hiring plans still are being developed and there are no firm numbers on the additional hires, according to Bayer Spokeswoman Staci Gouveia and St. Joseph Director of Quality Valerie Welter. “We will be hiring,” Ms. Welter told the News-Press at the conclusion of a sesquicentennial event at the company’s North American animal health headquarters in Shawnee, Kan. No other details, including a timeline, were revealed. Celebrations of the Germany-based parent company’s 150th birthday were observed throughout Tuesday at all global locations, with the Shawnee site commemorating its 50th anniversary. Bayer currently employs about 200 people in St. Joseph and fielded a work force of about 260 in April. A reduction of 40 employees will be completed at the end of the year. Those changes were linked to the early January acquisition of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, with the positions identified as redundant. The acquisition of Teva, at $145 million, is listed as the largest purchase in company history.
