MOSCOW, Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- A Vermont eye surgeon performed the first ever accommodating Crystalens surgery in Russia when he implanted the Crystalens HD into a 49 year old Russian cataract patient. Dr. Jack Singer of the Singer Eye Center of Randolph, Vermont performed the surgery at the Ninth International Conference on Modern Technologies in Cataract and Refractive Surgery in Moscow, Russia.
The live televised surgery was watched by some 800 European refractive and cataract surgeons who attended the conference at the S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Complex State Institution in Moscow. It was the first live Crystalens HD surgery ever conducted in Europe.
Crystalens, which is a product of Bausch & Lomb, is the only FDA approved accommodating intraocular lens. Unlike the standard cataract replacement lenses, Crystalens not only eliminates the patient’s cataract but also gives the patient a full range of vision so that the patient can see near, fear and everything in between. Many Crystalens patients hardly ever need their glasses or contacts again.
Dr. Singer has performed eye surgery around the world. He called the Russian experience an honor.

Dr. Singer implanted the Crystalens HD into a 49-year old Moscow woman, Tatiana Pichugina who had developed a dense cataract. She had surgery on her opposite eye two years ago with a fixed focus intraocular lens that Dr. Singer said provided her good distance vision.
“After we implanted the Crystalens HD, as we expected she not only had much better distance vision but also reported improved near vision. Tatiana was very happy with the result because she now enjoys a broad range of distance, intermediate and near vision. Like other Crystalens patients, she is enjoying improved functional vision and a better quality of life,” added Dr. Singer.
Dr. Singer also was featured at two separate lectures during the Conference where he discussed topics of importance to his fellow surgeons such as Crystalens surgical technique, prevention of complications, and the important role clinic staff plays in presenting this new technology to prospective patients.
