Georgia Psychological Association Names Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award Winners

ATLANTA, Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Ed Baker, Publisher of the Atlanta Business Chronicle, will join the Georgia Psychological Association (GPA) to honor BrightHouse and Emory University with the Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award. The award program was created to recognize businesses and organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to the psychological health and well-being of their employees.

“In this time of high job stress and increasing demands on employees, these exemplary workplaces have made it a priority to create environments that are sensitive to the mental well-being of their workers,” says Dr. James Purvis, President of the Georgia Psychological Association. “By rewarding these businesses and organizations for their efforts, we hope others will take notice and implement similar programs in their workplaces.”

According to a 2004 poll by the American Psychological Association, two- thirds of both men and women say work has a significant impact on their stress level, and one in four has called in sick or taken a “mental health day” as a result of work stress. In addition, the Journal of Occupational and Environpsychological Medicine has reported that health care expenditures are nearly 50% greater for workers who report high levels of stress.

The awards will be handed out on Tuesday, October 19, 8:00-10:00 am at the Loudermilk Conference Center, Atlanta, Georgia.
