DMAA Announces Recipients Of Its 2004 Recognizing Excellence Awards Program

WASHINGTON, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The Disease Management Association of America (DMAA) announced the recipients of its 6th Annual Recognizing Excellence Awards Program on October 21st at the Marriott World Center in Orlando, Florida. The Awards Banquet, sponsored by American Healthways, honors individuals and companies for their leadership in the field of disease management and was held in conjunction with DMAA’s 6th Annual Disease Management Leadership Forum. Two new awards categories were added this year - - Best DM Program Intervention for Co-Morbid Depression and the Matria Healthcare, Inc. Employer-Based Leadership Award. Awards were presented by The Recognizing Excellence Awards Program Committee Co-Chairs, Russell Ellison, M.D., Vice President of Medical Affairs at Sanofi-Aventis and Donald Fetterolf, M.D., MBA, Vice President & Senior Medical Officer of Highmark, Inc.

In addition, DMAA President, Samuel Nussbaum, MD of Anthem announced that Tommy Thompson, Secretary of the Department of Health & Human Services was the recipient of the 2004 President’s Award. In presenting the Association’s top award to Secretary Thompson, during the opening ceremonies of the Summit Dr. Nussbaum noted the Secretary’s longstanding leadership and dedication to helping Americans suffering from chronic disease live better lives.

Also presented at the opening ceremonies was DMAA’s Pioneers in Excellence Award for disease management leadership outside of the United States. Last year this award was presented to the National Healthcare Group and the Ministry of Health of Singapore. The 2004 Pioneers in Excellence Award was presented by DMAA Executive Director, Warren E. Todd to the Australian Disease Management Association (ADMA) and Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Disease Management (DGDM). These two organizations are recently formed DM associations that have a common mission as the DMAA and are affiliated with the DMAA. Accepting the awards were Dan Hook of the Australian Health Group and Board member of ADMA and Helmut Hildebrandt, principal of Hildebrandt GesundheitsConsult GmbH and Board member of DGDM.

Special sponsored awards were also presented by American Healthways, Health Management Corporation, Matria, Pfizer Health Solutions and Sanofi- Aventis.
