SEATTLE, Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Cancer Lifeline announced today that Executive Director, Barbara Frederick, has chosen to retire from her leadership position of 22 years at Cancer Lifeline. Frederick has become known throughout the region as a champion for providing emotional and educational support to cancer patients and their families before, during, and after medical treatment. “Under Barbara’s caring leadership, Cancer Lifeline has helped tens of thousands of people in our community who are living with cancer to walk their journey with dignity, and most importantly, with the sense that they are not alone,” said Cancer Lifeline client and friend, Bill Gates, Sr. “I know from personal experience how meaningful this can be, as my own family has benefited from Barbara’s wise counsel and the services provided by Cancer Lifeline.”
Perhaps even more remarkable than her myriad accomplishments at the helm of Cancer Lifeline is the personal touch and profound culture of caring Frederick has cultivated in the organization during her tenure. Frederick joined Cancer Lifeline in 1982 as Associate Director and became Executive Director in 1987. In addition to continuing to support Cancer Lifeline’s mission, Frederick’s future plans include spending time with her family and four grand-children while enjoying more leisure time.
“Barbara’s leadership will be missed, but because of the remarkable team of staff she has assembled and the support she has garnered from the healthcare community, the organization is well positioned to continue its mission,” said Jane Caron, president of the Cancer Lifeline Board of Directors. “There are still components of Barbara’s vision yet to fulfill, and her team is prepared to make each goal a reality.” To honor Frederick and ensure the continued success of her vision, Cancer Lifeline has established a leadership giving program, to be named the Barbara Frederick Circle. An executive search is underway to name Frederick’s successor.
Cancer Lifeline’s mission is to optimize the quality of life for all people living with cancer. Operating in Seattle since 1973, the not-for-profit organization now serves more than 10,000 cancer patients, survivors, families, co-workers and friends annually through programs, classes and services. All programs except workplace consulting services are free of charge. Cancer Lifeline is located at the Dorothy S. O’Brien Center in the Green Lake area, Cancer Lifeline-Eastside at Eastgate Office Park, and a Cancer Lifeline site at Northwest Hospital. The organization also offers lymphedema education and support programs in 11 counties throughout western Washington.
