ABMS Approves Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Subspecialty

Washington, DC (March 24, 2011)—The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and the American Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) announced yesterday the accreditation of a new subspecialty: Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. This subspecialty is jointly boarded by both the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) and the American Board of Urology (ABU). Forty-three jointly accredited fellowship programs support the subspecialty.

As the leading organization representing Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgeons, the American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS) is in a unique position to support subspecialist physicians who are interested in obtaining board certification. “AUGS is thrilled with ABMS’ decision to formally recognize and accredit our subspecialty. Supporting both ABOG and ABU has been AUGS’ mission for many years,” said Deborah Myers, MD, AUGS President.

AUGS will provide comprehensive review courses and educational resources in support of physicians as they prepare for board certification in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery.
