Raises Worldwide Awareness of Augmentative and Alternative Communication
October Awareness Month to celebrate people who use AAC and
recognize their community leadership
Toronto, Canada— October 23, 2018— ISAAC, the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication, has designated October as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Awareness Month.
AAC Awareness Month, themed Dare to Lead, is dedicated to raising awareness of AAC and to inform the public about the many different ways in which people communicate using high-tech or low-tech communication aids and innovative communication strategies. The month of celebration is also designed to sing the praises of people who use AAC and acknowledge their powerful leadership within their communities.
“AAC provides a way for people to communicate with their loved ones, employers and community—making it possible to express themselves both in spoken and written form,” said Lateef McLeod, ISAAC Chair for the Lead Committee. “Thanks to the power of AAC, I am proudly one of those people able to make my voice heard and make an impact on the world around me. This month of awareness is intended to bring attention to the importance and capabilities of these devices and strategies and celebrate the gifts, hearts and brilliance of people who use AAC aids.”
ISAAC’s goal is to create worldwide awareness about how AAC can help individuals with little or no speech, communicate using assistive technology tools and strategies to solve every day communicative challenges. To advance that effort, ISAAC will engage its 15 Chapters around the world, during the month of October, to plan and/or attend AAC awareness events in their communities or participate in online events. Chapters are encouraged to shine a light on the visions and leadership capabilities of people who use AAC and foster future leadership opportunities – locally, nationally or internationally.
