60 Michigan Hospitals Receive The Governor’s Award Of Excellence For Improving Patient Care

LANSING, Mich., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Sixty Michigan hospitals today received MPRO’s, Michigan’s Quality Improvement Organization, 2003 Governor’s Award of Excellence for Improving Care in the Hospital Setting. In addition, 48 hospitals received the 2003 Governor’s Award of Excellence for Improving Care in the Emergency Department Setting.

“Few things affect the quality of our life and the quality of our work more than our good health,” said Governor Jennifer M. Granholm. “It is important to recognize the strides that hospitals and health care professionals are making towards providing our citizens with accessible and affordable healthcare.”

“Governor Granholm’s endorsement of this inaugural award for hospitals is a testament of her commitment to improving the quality of health care in Michigan,” said Debra L. Moss, MD, MBA, president and chief executive officer, MPRO. Dr. Moss added, “As Michigan’s health care quality improvement experts, MPRO is honored to partner with the Governor in recognizing hospitals that are achieving measured improvements in patient care, and more importantly, saving lives in the process.”

The accolades honor Michigan hospitals that are performing quality initiatives to advance patient care in hospitals and emergency departments. The award acknowledges facilities that are actively engaged in improving care in one or more of the following clinical areas:

 * Acute Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack) * Heart Failure * Pneumonia * Surgical Infection Prevention

The highlighted topics have been designated as national health care priorities by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). The award- winning hospitals established multidisciplinary teams for the selected clinical topics. Led by a designated physician champion and project leader, the facilities used proven, evidence-based practices to produce successful measured outcomes in the clinical areas chosen.

“Improving care and realizing successful outcomes was the goal of each and every recipient,” said Colleen Cieszkowski, RN, MA, CPHQ, vice president health care quality, MPRO. Ms. Cieszkowski added, “Team work, innovation, and commitment to care, was the motivation behind the quality improvement initiatives.”

MPRO is designated by CMS as Michigan’s quality improvement organization for the state’s 1.4 million Medicare beneficiaries. Since 1984, MPRO has worked closely with hospitals, and other health care providers, to improve the quality of health care in Michigan.

The Governor and MPRO honored the hospital awardees with a special ceremony at the Capitol Rotunda in Lansing, Michigan. Earlier this year, the Governor bestowed an award of excellence on 165 Michigan physicians’ offices that demonstrated improvement in patient care in the physician office setting.
