Five of Japan’s largest pharmaceutical companies have joined forces with their government in a pioneering $100m partnership to fund international research into treatments for diseases of the poor. The Global Health Innovative Technology Fund, which is set to unveil its first grant programme in the coming days and begin to make grants over the summer, will provide money to identify and develop drugs and vaccines for HIV, malaria, tuberculosis and more neglected tropical diseases. Astellas, Eisai, Daiichi Sankyo, Shionogi and Takeda have each agreed in principle to pledge $1m a year over five years, matched with extra support from Japan’s government and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
