The WuXi PharmaTech Life Science and Chemistry Award was approved by the National Office of Science and Technology Awards in early 2007, aiming to stimulate life science and chemistry research and reward those who have had significant achievements in their respective research fields.
Mr. Zhang Huaixi and Mr. Li Meng, both Vice Chairmans of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Mr. Xu Guanhua, the former Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Mr. Cheng Jinpei, the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Mr. Gao Huchen, the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Commerce attended the ceremony and presented the awards to 17 young professionals in honor of their outstanding achievements in life science and chemistry fields.

On April 6, 2007, the company announced the establishment of the “WuXi PharmaTech Life Science and Chemistry Award” and set up an evaluation panel to conduct the annual selection. This year’s award selection panel comprises nine scholars with industry expertise. Dr. Cheng Jinpei, the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Dr. Sang Guowei, the famous clinical pharmacology specialist and the Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, serve as Chairman and Vice Chairman of the selection panel, respectively. Other panel members include three academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dr. Zhang Lihe, Professor of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Peking University, Dr. Chen Kaixian, President of the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Dr. Lin Guoqiang, Professor of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry; and the renowned scientist Dr. Yang Zhen, the “Changjiang Scholarship” Professor of the College of Chemistry & Molecular Engineering, Peking University.
Seeking to honor young professionals for their research contributions to life science and chemistry, the award panel undertook a rigorous selection process to select the 17 winners. Dr. Ma Dawei, the first prize winner, who is working at the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, commented in his speech at the ceremony, “I am extremely happy and honored to receive this award as this is the first national award set up in life science and chemistry fields by a homegrown company.”

About WuXi PharmaTech Life Science and Chemistry Award
The WuXi PharmaTech Life Science and Chemistry Award was approved and endorsed by the National Office of Science and Technology Awards in February, 2007, designed to promote China’s scientific and technological development. WuXi PharmaTech will reward young professionals of Chinese citizenship who make an outstanding achievement in the field of chemistry, biology, or other life science related disciplines. The scope of the award selection for this year is settled on chemistry, and will focus on toxicology, biology, pharmacology and other related fields in the following years.
WuXi PharmaTech provides one million RMB to fund such an annual award beginning from 2007. The special prize winners, first prize winners, second prize winners and third prize winners will get a reward of 200,000 RMB, 100,000 RMB, 50,000 RMB and 20,000 RMB respectively.
In the first half of the calendar year the award organization settles the scope of the award selection and announces the selection procedure on the corporate website and related academic journals. Applications are accepted through both individual submission and recommendations by scholars and professors in the related fields. In the second half of the calendar year an evaluation panel is organized to conduct the selection and the company will hold the award ceremony at the end of the year.
