Walking, jogging, and cycling may be key in the battle against metabolic syndrome, whereas weight lifting doesn’t help on its own, a randomized trial found. Eight months of resistance training had little impact on metabolic syndrome or its components in overweight adults with poor lipid profiles, Lori A. Bateman, MS, of Duke University Medical Center, and colleagues reported online in the American Journal of Cardiology. But the same duration of aerobic exercise yielded greater benefits for weight, waist circumference, triglycerides, and overall metabolic syndrome score, with significant benefits on all counts for the combination of aerobics and weights.
