ANAHEIM, Calif., July 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) has introduced a speedier version of of its VariSeed brachytherapy treatment planning software at the annual meeting of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) here this week. The Varian exhibit is also featuring a new SmartConnect Plus offering for proactively monitoring and servicing its TrueBeam® and Edge cancer treatment systems.
VariSeed Software
Varian’s new VariSeed software release provides faster, more flexible brachytherapy planning with improvements in workflow and supports both practitioners new to seed implant techniques and those carrying out complex real-time procedures.“This software release helps to improve workflow, speed up the planning process, and enhance the precision of low-dose-rate brachytherapy planning,” said Rebecca Park, Varian Brachytherapy product manager. “It demonstrates Varian’s commitment to improve the affordability, accessibility and quality of cancer treatment.” Varian’s VariSeed brachytherapy treatment planning system is well established with some 1,600 systems installed in more than 40 countries worldwide.
VariSeed now also features a new VariPath module that supports the use of data and images from transperineal ultrasound-guided biopsies, allowing the planning, tracking and recording of results, with the additional option of fusing these findings with MRI images. Transperineal biopsies are able to reach more of the prostate than the more common transrectal approach, potentially affording clinicians greater confidence in their diagnoses.
SmartConnect Plus Proactive Monitoring Service
Varian’s SmartConnect Plus offering enables service personnel to proactively diagnose, troubleshoot, and make repairs to these systems in real time so clinics can continue to serve patients with minimal disruption. Using this service, Varian’s technical experts remotely see what customers see and deal with problems faster than would be possible if service engineers had to be dispatched to the site.Software Advances
Varian is also highlighting its RapidPlan and SmartSegmentation software tools for enhancing the speed, quality and consistency of radiotherapy and radiosurgery planning.
“At Varian, we are focused on the idea of linking minds and transforming knowledge into action, and many of the products and services we are showcasing at AAPM this year were developed with that in mind,” said Kolleen Kennedy, president of Varian Oncology Systems. “Our products and services are designed to support clinicians in delivering high-quality cancer care more efficiently.”
