PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept. 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR), a world leader in radiotherapy and X-ray imaging technology, is announcing the publication of its annual corporate social responsibility report, detailing the company’s policies and achievements in extending access to cancer care, protecting resources, and helping to save lives.
The Varian 2015 Sustainability Report has been produced as part of a wider company effort to continually improve sustainability performance and transparency. As a result, Varian is increasingly recognized as a leader in the field and was rated among the greenest companies in the U.S. by the Newsweek Green Rankings for 2014. In January 2015, Varian was the highest ranked medical device company in the Corporate Knights Global 100 listing of the most sustainable corporations in the world.
“It comes naturally to Varian to want to contribute not only to saving lives by providing affordable access to advanced cancer care but to improving lives through good corporate citizenship,” said Dow Wilson, chief executive officer of Varian Medical Systems. “We strive to maximize the positive effects of our activity by weaving sustainability into every aspect of business, meeting climate change and other environmental challenges, delivering safe and effective products, and measuring our social impact in meaningful ways.”
Since 2010, Varian has produced the annual sustainability report as part of a larger effort to consider the impact of all aspects of Varian business activities. “2015 marks the fifth year we have produced a comprehensive, company-wide examination of our sustainability performance to identify challenges and opportunities to be addressed over time with the close participation of our senior leaders from all divisions, key geographies, and core functions,” added Wilson.
The achievements highlighted in the Varian Sustainability Report 2015 include programs that extend access to advanced cancer care in developing countries, provide healthcare training and education, and expand global health collaborations. The report also spotlights ongoing reductions in greenhouse gases and hazardous waste, along with progress towards reducing the consumption of water and natural gas.
The report outlines the governance structure that determines Varian’s sustainability activities and measures performance against goals stated in its inaugural report. Based on internationally-recognized GRI (global reporting initiative) parameters, this year’s report contains content developed in reference to the GRI’s G4 guidelines.
