PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept. 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR), a world leader in radiotherapy and X-ray imaging technology, is announcing the publication of its annual corporate social responsibility report, detailing the company’s policies and achievements in extending care, protecting resources, and helping to save lives. The Varian 2013 Sustainability Report has been produced as part of a wider company investment to continually improve sustainability performance and transparency.
“Companies such as ours have a responsibility to achieve our business goals in a socially and environmentally responsible manner,” says Dow Wilson, chief executive officer of Varian Medical Systems. “While we continue to develop better therapeutic capabilities for fighting cancer and other diseases as well as better components for X-ray imaging and for cargo screening, we continually strive to do so in ways which extend access to advanced care, improve clinical outcomes, optimize safety, and make a positive impact on the communities where we operate.”
Three years ago, Varian commenced a company-wide undertaking to examine sustainability performance and identify challenges and opportunities to be addressed over time. “We have made a commitment to produce annual updates so we could measure our achievements against defined sustainability goals,” adds Wilson. “This effort involves the close participation of senior leaders from all divisions, key geographies, and core functions.”
The achievements highlighted in the Varian Sustainability Report 2013 include programs that utilize the company’s growing global network of education centers to provide much-needed training and education for personnel in developing countries. The report also spotlights successful reductions in electricity and natural gas consumption, along with progress towards greenhouse gas emission reduction goals.
The report outlines the governance structure that determines Varian’s sustainability activities and measures performance against goals stated in 2011’s inaugural report. It is divided into four key areas: environmental, health access and outcomes, safety and responsibility, and colleagues and communities. Based on internationally-recognized GRI (global reporting initiative) parameters, this year’s report has received an application level ‘B’ rating from the GRI.
