Thermage, Inc. Release: Study Showing Radiofrequency Can Be Used Safely Over Soft-Tissue Fillers Published In Lasers In Surgery And Medicine Journal

HAYWARD, Calif., April 11 /PRNewswire/ -- A new study published in the March 2006 issue of Lasers in Surgery and Medicine Journal found that radiofrequency (RF) treatment could be safely used over human skin injected with medium-term soft-tissue fillers (Restylane and Radiesse).

“Patients are increasingly opting for combination treatments like Thermage and fillers, where they can get a surgery-like result without the downtime, risk and costs associated with surgery,” said Murad Alam, M.D. “We now have convincing clinical evidence demonstrating that patients can safely benefit from this combination of minimally invasive treatments.”

The study examined the safety of the combined use of radiofrequency and soft-tissue fillers in six patients. All patients were injected with soft-tissue fillers on the upper inner arm. Five of the subjects were treated with RF over the filler-injected sites, while the sixth patient served as the control subject and did not receive RF treatment. Filler injected skin was microscopically (histologically) examined three days after RF treatment. The study showed no change in the appearance of the filler substances compared with untreated filler and no evidence of microscopic damage to the filler or surrounding skin. Both Thermage and soft-tissue fillers are commonly used in the lower face to soften nasolabial folds and perioral rhytides.

“Publication of this significant first-of-its-kind study in peer-reviewed literature is an important milestone for Thermage,” said Stephen J. Fanning, President and Chief Executive Officer at Thermage. “This study is an important step in providing the aesthetic community with scientific evidence on the combined use of Thermage over soft-tissue fillers and will assist physicians in counseling their patients more effectively on the best combinations of minimally invasive procedures to meet their goals.”
