Given that 75 percent of individuals who began abusing opioids in the 2000s say their first opioid was a prescription drug, this is a critical healthcare issue that threatens entire communities.
We also urge the President to mandate education surrounding opioid prescribing and the risks of patients developing a substance use disorder, as well as requiring all Drug Enforcement Administration registrants to take a course in the proper treatment of pain.
We believe such recommendations would provide an important step in what will be a long, much-needed push to empower physicians, improve prescribing practices and save lives in the battle against opioid abuse. Only by working together, can policy makers, community leaders and the medical community end this crisis.
