Summers Laboratories Release: Non-Insecticide Lice Treatment Kills Lice By Asphyxiation; Phase III Studies Permitted By FDA Are Currently Enrolling Subjects

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa., April 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Parents, pediatricians, school nurses and especially kids will be happy to learn that a remarkably non-toxic, insecticide-free treatment for head lice may soon be available. Summers Laboratories is well on its way to proving the safety and effectiveness of its patented lice asphyxiator to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for approval as a prescription head lice treatment.

By the end of 2005, three human studies totaling 167 subjects, were conducted to demonstrate the safety, efficacy and minimum effective dose of the Summers lice asphyxiator product. The last of those studies showed a 100% effective kill rate at day 15 of the study.

Summers Laboratories is actively enrolling patients in Phase III clinical trials for its patented lice asphyxiator. Phase III studies are the final round of clinical studies required by the FDA drug approval process.

Working title: Lice Choker(TM)

While the commercial name has not been finalized, the Summers' staff and researchers have affectionately named the new treatment Lice Choker(TM) because of its unique mode of action to kill lice by asphyxiation.

Lice Choker(TM) consists of a simple mixture of ingredients currently used in other dermatological medications and cosmetics. Lice require oxygen to live and have developed sophisticated breathing apparatus called spiracles. They can close their spiracles and "hold their breath" for many hours. This is why other asphyxiating treatments like olive oil and even petroleum jelly yield only limited success. Summers Labs' novel, patented treatment prevents lice from closing their spiracles and clogs the spiracles effectively asphyxiating the lice. Studies show that a 10-minute treatment is all that is required to asphyxiate lice with Lice Choker(TM). A second treatment is performed in approximately a week to kill any lice that hatch from nits after the first treatment. In addition to being virtually odorless, and easily rinsed after treatment, subjects reported that Lice Choker(TM) left their hair feeling as if they have used a salon hair conditioner.

Successful studies and approval for marketing by the FDA would allow Lice Choker(TM) to be a superb alternative to neuro-toxic pesticides both from a safety perspective and related pesticide resistance being reported by lice treatment experts.
