Instead of implanting a medical device to keep arrhythmic hearts beating on pace, researchers at Ohio State dream of being able to give the heart back its own natural pacemaking abilities. Making pacemakers obsolete is the ultimate vision of Vadim Fedorov, Cynthia Carnes, PharmD and Peter Mohler at The Ohio State University Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute. They were recently awarded a $1.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to dig deeper into sinus node dysfunction, a condition associated with atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter.
