MedWire: Having screening mammograms read by two experienced radiographers in addition to a pair of radiologists increases the breast cancer detection rate by 7%, Dutch researchers report. The findings highlight the fact that radiographers detected cancers that would have been missed by radiologists working alone. However, each additional cancer detected incurred an average additional cost of €2078 ($3,294USD), and the authors concede that countries with a shortage of screening professionals such as the UK may not be able to accommodate this approach.
