RENTON, Wash. and IRVINE, Calif., July 30, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Providence St. Joseph Health (PSJH), the nation’s third-largest health system, today announced it has been named to Forbes’ first ‘Best Employers for Women’ list. PSJH ranked number eight out of the top 300 companies and five out of all listed health care organizations.

“On behalf of our 119,000 caregivers, we are proud to be named as a Best Employer for Women,” says Rod Hochman, M.D., president and CEO of Providence St. Joseph Health. “As the oldest continually operating women-founded organization in the world, we are committed to a workplace that values dignity, respect, and diversity, allowing everyone - men and women - to reach their full potential. I am certain that our founders, the pioneering religious women who provided health services to the American West 150 years ago, are joining us in celebrating this incredible honor.”

The rankings are based on an independent survey from a sample of 40,000 employees - including more than 25,000 women - working for companies with 1,000 or more employees. Respondents were asked to rate their employers on various factors, including working conditions, diversity, parental leave, family support, and career and pay equity. Diversity among top executives and board members was also considered.

Providence St. Joseph Health (listed by Forbes as Providence Health & Services, the organization’s name before coming together with St. Joseph Health in 2016) is committed to enhancing opportunities for its predominantly female workforce and all of its employees. In a three-year period, the organization saw a 50 percent uptick in women leaders, the result of a wide-ranging approach to identify and elevate high-potential women throughout the health system.

“We’ve added mentorship programs and support for women at all levels and half of the most senior leaders in our organization are women. Additionally, we draw a line on harassment by saying #NotHere. As a field where women comprise the majority of the workforce but leadership has been traditionally male, health care is ready for change, and we are excited to be at the forefront,” says Debra A. Canales, executive vice president and chief administrative officer at the health system.

This is the organization’s second recent recognition from Forbes. Earlier this year, Forbes also named Providence St. Joseph Health one of “America’s Best Employers for Diversity” and, in 2015, “America’s Best Employers.”
