Procter & Gamble Receives Alliance Excellence Award From The Association Of Strategic Alliance Professionals

CINCINNATI, Feb. 15, 2007 /PRNewswire/ -- Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (PGP), a division of The Procter & Gamble Company , today announced it is a recipient of the 2007 Alliance Program Excellence Award, presented by the Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals (ASAP). The award recognizes and celebrates companies worldwide that have achieved dramatic success through their alliances and alliance programs.

The ASAP Awards Committee consists of leading academics, analysts, thought leaders and consultants who have extensive experience with, and insight into, strategic alliances. The awards were presented last week at the ASAP 2007 Alliance Summit.

“We are honored to be receiving this award from ASAP in recognition of P&G Pharmaceuticals’ alliance capability and track record,” said Tom Finn, vice president, strategic planning and new business development, P&G Pharmaceuticals. “At P&G, we believe that a strong alliance mindset, capability and training can significantly improve the odds of alliance success. Our employees are passionate and personally committed to alliance behaviors that are mutually beneficial for both our partners and us.”

P&G Pharmaceuticals’ alliance effectiveness success is directly linked to the company’s “Connect + Develop” innovation model. Through Connect + Develop, P&G is seeking to build a global innovation network by identifying and connecting with the talents and technologies of institutes and companies around the world. The Connect + Develop innovation model allows P&G to forge relationships that collaboratively create new products and continuously improve existing brands. P&G’s target is to source 50 percent of its innovation from outside of the company.

P&G Pharmaceuticals has made the strategic choice to source 100 percent of its new drug development initiatives from outside, to focus on partnering and acquiring -- rather than discovering internally -- new prescription medicines. Its intent is to source all of its new drugs from a network of biotech and pharmaceutical industry relationships. Within the healthcare industry, P&G Pharmaceuticals is recognized for applying the marketing expertise and unique insights of the world’s largest consumer products company, along with the personal touch of a small, pharmaceutical company with a proven track record.

“One of the key reasons PGP was chosen by us as a partner was because of its partnership-oriented mindset and proven alliance track record,” said Paul Goddard, M.D., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, ARYx Therapeutics, a San Francisco-based company involved in an alliance with P&G to co-develop a gastrointestinal compound, ATI-7505. “In our work together to develop ATI- 7505, P&G’s capabilities have been very apparent and welcomed by our team.”

Recipients of the Alliance Program Excellence Award have also demonstrated commitment to advance and share alliance management practices. The ASAP selection committee determined that award recipients are exemplary companies - - serving as models of effective alliance management; innovative -- advancing the state of the art of alliance management; high-impact -- achieving major business success through alliance management; and open -- willing to share experiences and best practices with other ASAP members and with the larger alliance professional community. Past winners of this ASAP recognition include: Lilly, IBM, Starbucks, Federal Express and Texas Instruments.

“We are pleased to recognize P&G Pharmaceuticals with an Alliance Program Excellence award for their exemplary commitment to implementing and sharing alliance best practices,” said Nick Palmer, a Partner with Accenture Ltd., and chairman of the ASAP Awards Committee. “P&G Pharmaceuticals’ collaborative mindset and dedication to alliance management has built a large, profitable business unit in company-record time. Company executives credit their alliance system with driving a profitable transformation across all of P&G. This is a company where alliances are not simply integrated into its strategy; alliances are its strategy.”
