October Is Cybersecurity Awareness Month—Bio Pharma Networking Group (BPNG) Announces Multi-Chapter FBI Outreach Events “Scientific Espionage: Protecting Your Assets From A Hack”

FBI partners with BPNG regional chapters to establish stronger relationships between local FBI special agents and corporations in the life sciences and healthcare industries to prevent and mitigate potential threats to our country’s trade secrets and big technical innovations.

Hillsborough, NJ, – October 4, 2017 – Bio Pharma Networking Group (BPNG) announced today a series of regional FBI counterintelligence speaking engagements at their free upcoming networking events.

“We are proud of our on-going alignment with the FBI”, said Regina Reynolds, BPNG brand director. “The goal of BPNG speaking events is to increase awareness on how to mitigating risk internal to organizations, and utilize the FBI counterintelligence expertise to educate and partner with innovative tech-driven companies and thought-leading researchers.”

No industry is immune to the threat of lost industrial information and intellectual property by foreign entities. As a result, Economic Espionage and Intellectual Property (IP) theft costs U.S. businesses in excess of a trillion dollars each year.

What is more valuable to a biotech or pharmaceutical company than their innovative research? Offenders breaking into firms and stealing trade secrets remains a top threat for the biotech and pharmaceutical markets. Moreover, the US Healthcare industry, specifically patient data, is now the largest target of cyber security attacks, reportedly at greater risk than manufacturing and banking.

“It’s a great opportunity for the MABPNG Chapter to partner with the FBI and HUB International a global insurance company”, said Logan Comeau, manager biotech/pharma/life sciences markets, Babson Executive Conference Center. “We are honored to be able to offer New England scientific professionals the chance to hear about exposures, legal ramification and the cost of a breach from the experts especially after one of the largest credit bureau agencies just experience a breach potentially impacting half of the US population.”

"We value the work of the cyber security community in helping researchers, engineers, and data scientists understand their role in protecting data. As amazing tools are developed for discover and clinical research, professionals will need to implement best practices earlier and earlier.” said Joanne Gere, executive director, Westchester Biotech Project. “Reaching out to pharma and biotech companies with knowledge on today's critical issues such as counterintelligence is very important to us,” said Ruth Logue, senior account executive at Alpha Consulting. “We believe supporting partnering programs like BPNG’s FBI events are key value building programs to grow a strong scientific community nationally.”

About the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division Outreach

The FBI is the lead agency for exposing, preventing, and investigating intelligence activities on U.S. soil, and the Counterintelligence Division uses its full suite of investigative and intelligence capabilities to combat counterintelligence threats. Economic espionage is a problem that costs the American economy hundreds of billions of dollars per year and puts our national security at risk. The FBI estimates that hundreds of billions of U.S. dollars are lost to foreign competitors every year. These foreign competitors deliberately target economic intelligence in advanced technologies and flourishing U.S. industries. Historically, economic espionage has targeted defense-related and high-tech industries. But recent FBI cases have shown that no industry, large or small, is immune to the threat. Any company with a proprietary product, process, or idea can be a target; any unprotected trade secret is vulnerable to theft by those who wish to illegally obtain innovations to increase their market share at a victim company’s expense.

The FBI works to counter the economic espionage threat by raising public awareness and informing industry leaders. In addition, the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division develops training and outreach materials, participates in conferences, and visits members of private industry. The FBI hopes to expand the scope of the audience to include a wider range of industry representatives, trade associations, and smaller companies and to encourage them to come forward if they suspect they are a victim of economic espionage. NOTE: October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM), an annual campaign to raise awareness about cybersecurity. The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) has published general tips to help you increase your cybersecurity awareness—including whom to contact if you are the victim of cyber crime—and protect your online activities. US-CERT encourages users and administrators to review NCSA’s guidance for online safety basics and the US-CERT Tip on Avoiding Social Engineering and Phishing Attacks for additional information.
