NORTHFIELD, Ill., Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Thomas M. Sodeman, MD, of Lake Success, N.Y., has been installed as the 29th president of the College of American Pathologists (CAP). He was sworn into his two-year term at a ceremony held at CAP ’05 -- the annual meeting of the College of American Pathologists -- in Chicago on Sept. 11, 2005.
“I am honored to assume this office,” said Dr. Sodeman. “It is a serious responsibility as president to provide the leadership needed to assure the College meets the needs of patients, pathologists and the public by advancing excellence in the practice of pathology.”
Dr. Sodeman is chairman of laboratory medicine at North Shore -- LIJ Health System in Lake Success, N.Y. He is active in a number of professional societies, including the American Pathology Foundation (APF) and the Nassau County Pathology Society, among others.
Dr. Sodeman most recently served the College as president-elect; chair of the Finance Committee; chair of the Council on Government and Professional Affairs; leader of the Advocacy Network; and as an inspector for the Laboratory Accreditation Program. He is also active with the Executive and National Meeting Planning committees.
Dr. Sodeman has held positions in academia as chairman and May Owens professor in the department of pathology at Texas Tech University, and as laboratory chair at the University of West Virginia.
He received his medical degree from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville. Dr. Sodeman interned at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and completed his residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Dr. Sodeman is board-certified in both anatomic and clinical pathology.
