LONDON, February 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2006 Frost & Sullivan Product Innovation of the Year Award in gene expression analysis technologies is presented to Miltenyi Biotec GmbH for its creation of a unique PrepProtect(TM) Stabilization Buffer. PrepProtect Buffer is non-toxic and stabilises the RNA, DNA or protein in cell or tissue samples for relatively long periods. It thereby prevents RNA degradation before isolation and analysis, and ensures more reliable downstream processing.
The parallel handling of multiple biological samples and quick processing are critical for accurate downstream analysis such as gene expression profiling. While this process requires high-quality RNA, chemical instability and susceptibility to ubiquitous RNases create major challenges. In this context, the PrepProtect Buffer enables much-needed RNA stabilisation.
“PrepProtect allows RNA stabilisation, in both freshly prepared as well as previously frozen samples,” notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Sirisha R S. “A fresh cell or tissue sample mixed with PrepProtect Solution can be stabilised for at least one day at 37 degreesC, one week at 18 degreesC to 25 degreesC, one month at 4 degreesC or for archival storage below -20 degreesC.”
The PrepProtect Solution prevents the degradation of RNA when direct analysis or quick-freezing, post sample collection, is not possible and when samples are being transported without dry ice or frozen tissue needs to be weighed and dissected. Due to its ability to facilitate sample collection and the parallel processing of multiple samples, as well as to allow samples to be shipped without the use of dry ice, the PrepProtect Solution has emerged as a reliable tool for downstream applications.
“PrepProtect also has the ability to seep through previously frozen material, and protects RNA during thawing,” adds Ms. Sirisha. “When the frozen samples are incubated in the PrepProtect solution, RNA in cells are stable for up to one hour at room temperature or overnight at 4 degreesC, thereby helping researchers prepare samples and weigh or dissect tissues before RNA isolation.”
PrepProtect Buffer also reduces the hardness of the frozen tissues by softening their structure. It thus facilitates tissue lysis and homogenisation without prior pulverisation with mortar and pestle. Furthermore, it helps to preserve both the quantity and quality of RNA for downstream analysis such as quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or microarray analysis. Moreover, along with the RNA stabilisation, PrepProtect Buffer preserves the integrity of DNA and denatured proteins in biological samples.
