MEGADYNE Named Utah Green Business by Utah Business Magazine

SALT LAKE CITY, UT--(Marketwire - November 04, 2010) -

Megadyne was named today as a Utah Business magazine Green Business award winner. The award program honors the best green practices and efforts in Utah, recognizing companies, communities and individuals who are making strides in environmental sustainability. Megadyne Medical Products is the developer, manufacturer and supplier of electrosurgical products.

Honored at an awards gala at the Grand America Hotel and profiled in the October issue of the magazine, Megadyne was selected for its overall green business practices and for its green reusable product lines:

  • The Mega Soft® and Mega Soft Pediatric reusable patient return electrodes. One Megadyne Mega Soft reusable patient return electrode can eliminate, on average, 1,500 disposable self-adhesive disposable pads. In addition to decreasing waste, reusable and resposable technologies deliver savings to a facility’s bottom line by reducing purchasing frequency and disposal cost.
  • The E-Z Pen™ Electrosurgical Pencil. The 12-time use E-Z Pen that produces 1/12th the waste of standard disposable electrosurgical pencils. The E-Z Pen uses patented technology to count the number of times the pencil has been used and then disables future use of the pencil once it has reached its end-of-life to insure the product is safe and effective for every procedure.

Used in hospitals and surgical centers worldwide, Megadyne estimates that the Mega Soft and E-Z Pen have saved millions of pounds of medical waste.

In addition to these product lines, Megadyne also offers the “It’s So Easy Being Green” training program that provides education on waste management, resource conversation and recycling practices, and surgical instrument reprocessing, reuse and repair.

To help evaluate a facility’s green potential, Megadyne also introduced the Green Sheet Waste Calculator that helps medical facilities easily compare and contrast the waste that can be saved by switching from disposable electrosurgical tools to green, reusable technologies.

“It is tremendously rewarding to receive this recognition from such a prestigious publication,” said Rob Farnsworth, Megadyne president and CEO. “Green practices have always been a part of our culture. We recognize the vital importance of our stewardship to develop and provide electrosurgical products that help preserve and protect our environment.”
