KGI Professor Ian Phillips to Address Media on Stem Cells at NYT Institute

CLAREMONT, Calif., April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Keck Graduate Institute (KGI) announced today that Ian Phillips, Ph.D., KGI's Norris Professor of Applied Life Sciences, will discuss the issues and key players in the national debate over stem cells at 9 a.m. EDT on May 11, 2007, during "Cells and Souls: The Science, Politics, and Ethics of Embryonic Stem Cell Research" in Manhattan. His presentation is part of a four-day Institute for Journalists, organized by the Department of Journalism at New York University in partnership with the New York Times Company Foundation.

"Dr. Phillips is a brilliant scientist and key proponent of expanding stem cell research," said Sheldon Schuster, Ph.D., KGI's president. "He is committed to stem cell education both at the public level and here at KGI where we are educating tomorrow's leaders of the life sciences."

Phillips' current research focuses on using stem cells to address chronic diseases including hypertension and heart disease. He pioneered the Vigilant Vectors system that regulates stem cell homing factors to repair and regenerate cells in damaged hearts and blood vessels. Phillips holds a MERIT Award from the National Institutes of Health, the 2002 Christopher Columbus Award for science and technology and the Lucian Award for research on circulatory disease.

This year's NYT Institute was created to educate a select group of journalists about embryonic stem cell research. The format will be a mixture of panels and roundtables and will include a visit to a stem-cell laboratory.

The institute will be held from May 10-14, 2007, on the campus of New York University. For more information, visit http://journalism.nyu.edu/.
