Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), which faces almost 24,000 lawsuits over its vaginal-mesh implants, claims women have received phone calls from strangers who know their personal medical information and solicit them to file fraudulent lawsuits so they can collect settlements.
The callers are misusing personal data protected by the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and are encouraging women to sue J&J, regardless of whether they suffered injuries caused by the mesh, according to a company filing today in federal court in Charleston, West Virginia.
