SOMERSET, N.J., March 12, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- #Black Lives Matter. LGBTQ+ removed from the Armed Services. Tarana Burke spiriting the #Metoo movement. Walls that imprison. Walls that shut out. Globalization of wealth and poverty. Renowned family therapist, sought-after lecturer, and activist Dr. Rhea Almeida tackles these issues in her new book, Liberation Based Healing Practices (Institute for Family Services, April 2019) synthesizing more than twenty years of research, community practice and engagement to create a new paradigm in psychology, family therapy, and allied disciplines of psychology.
Born into the Desi Indian and African diaspora, diagnosed with polio as a young child, Dr. Almeida and her family were forced to flee to the United States when Dictator Idi Amin came to power. As a cis-gender, disabled woman of color, Dr. Almeida navigated new spaces where she developed strategies and tools to shift the foundations of Critical Consciousness from one of victimhood and abuse to one of empowerment and accountability.
Through case studies with step-by-step solutions to engender healing she exposes the therapeutic norms of Western societies that too readily support the status quo. Many of these norms support practices entangled with histories of coloniality often anchored within individual pathologies.
Dr. Almeida’s liberation based healing perspective has become a gold standard for therapists and individuals worldwide people across family and community boundaries. She has won numerous awards including the American Family Therapy Academy Distinguished Award for Innovative Contributions to Family Therapy and has been profiled in the Los Angeles Times, NPR, CNN and Pure Oxygen.
