The presentations took place at Foster Wheeler’s UK headquarters in Reading and were hosted by IChemE president Desmond King and qualifications director Neil Atkinson.
Atkinson says that the new membership grade helps IChemE better recognise senior figures without a traditional chemical engineering background: “The new Associate Fellow grade helps us recognise senior professionals that work with chemical engineers, or have major roles of responsibility in industry or academia and have a natural interest in the process industries.
“The previous affiliate member grade was offered primarily to members without a formal chemical engineering qualification. This included students as well as very senior members of industry, perhaps managers without a chemical engineering background in major process companies. This was no longer appropriate,” says Atkinson.
The first six people to become Associate Fellows of IChemE are:
- Andy Brown, engineering director at Progressive Energy (FIMechE);
- Janice Crawford, director of engineering operations at Foster Wheeler (FIMechE);
- Mike Green, head of school and chair of chemistry at Newcastle University, UK (FRSC);
- Ronny Lardner, director of the Keil Centre (Chartered occupational psychologist);
- Dave Price, managing director of GexCon (FIIRSM)
- Brian Tyler, head of S&T consultants (FRSC)
Other new Associate Fellows unable to attend the ceremony are:
- Graeme Armstrong, corporate director at Azko Nobel (FRSC);
- Jonathan Atkinson, patent attorney and partner at Harrison Goddard Foote (FRSC);
- Steve Elliott, ceo at the Chemical Industries Association;
- Herman Feise, senior research manager at BASF (vice president of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering);
- John Sofranko, president and ceo of Bio2Electric (former executive director at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers).

About chemical engineers
Chemical, biochemical and process engineering is the application of science, maths and economics to the process of turning raw materials into everyday products. Professional chemical engineers design, construct and manage process operations all over the world. Pharmaceuticals, food and drink, synthetic fibres and clean drinking water are just some of the products where chemical engineering plays a central role.
About IChemE
IChemE (Institution of Chemical Engineers) is the hub for chemical, biochemical and process engineering professionals worldwide. With a growing global membership of over 32,000, the Institution is at the heart of the process community, promoting competence and a commitment to best practice, advancing the discipline for the benefit of society, encouraging young people in science and engineering and supporting the professional development of its members.
