icad, inc. Introduces PowerLook(TM) For Its SecondLook(R) CAD Viewers

NASHUA, N.H., Oct. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- iCAD(R), Inc. , an industry-leading provider of Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) solutions, today announced PowerLook, a software extension to its SecondLook Viewer product line. SecondLook Viewers are used in conjunction with the company’s SecondLook 300 and SecondLook 700 CAD Solutions. The SecondLook Viewer displays a digital rendering of the mammogram, including CAD marks to highlight suspicious areas on a mammogram, on a high resolution, touch screen monitor. The iCAD system and the new PowerLook viewer are designed and provided to support a radiologist doing primary reading of mammograms and related diagnosis from the original mammography films.

PowerLook brings the essential tools of digital reading to film based mammography, allowing a radiologist to better understand the context in which a mammogram is marked with CAD indicators, or in which an area that the radiologist considers suspicious on primary reading is not marked by CAD analysis. PowerLook offers:

* Window / Level adjustment for brightness control * Min / Max automatically adjusts the gray levels to match the brightest and darkest areas in each mammogram * Digital Zoom magnifies any portion of the digitized image up to 8 times * Pan allows the physician to easily move through the enlarged portions of the image * Flip switches the orientation of the image in the blink of an eye * Invert switches light for dark and dark for light to invert the color scale * Rules or grids place ruler tic marks or a full grid over the image so that measurements converted to actual mm or inch units can be obtained * Print prints the exact image adjustment made on each mammogram to paper or Postscript file

All of these PowerLook tools are used by merely touching the screen. PowerLook creates a magnified portion of the mammogram shown in reference to the full scale digitized image of each view. The magnified image chip can be shown at 1X, 2X, 4X or 8x magnification. Window and Level can be operated in a continuous motion or through 4 customized settings. The rules and grid markings make measurement a breeze. The CAD markings are always displayed with these Power tools.

The recent Digital Mammography Imaging Screening Test (DMIST) study released in September highlights the comparative benefits of film-based and digital mammography. Some of the digital benefits are made possible by being able to read the case in a digital workflow. Digital Zoom, rules, and window / level adjustments are far easier to use than the traditional magnifying glass, clear plastic ruler, and bright light. When offered for use with film based CAD, physicians can use the new PowerLook features to further examine the information in the image before making the final read based on the film.

“The workflow associated with softcopy reading has been shown to greatly improve mammography reading. Our PowerLook viewer makes some of these features accessible within the framework of film based mammography. We believe that coupling PowerLook with our Gateway to Digital Program makes the decision by film based mammography centers to invest in CAD now, much easier,” notes W. Scott Parr, President and CEO of iCAD, Inc., “The costs of delaying a decision to acquire CAD until moving to digital mammography are significant,” noted W. Scott Parr, President and CEO of iCAD, Inc., “in both clinical and economic terms.”
