Hygieia Announces Successful Adoption Of The d-Nav Insulin Guidance Service In Northern Ireland’s South Eastern Health Trust

Belfast, Northern Ireland, November 18, 2015 – Hygieia, a digital insulin enhancement company dedicated to making insulin therapy easier for everyone involved, announced today that medical professionals and patients in Northern Ireland’s South Eastern Health Trust are successfully adopting and using the company’s d-Nav® insulin guidance service.

The South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust (SEHSCT) is the first health system in the world to adopt d-Nav as a new standard of care for patients. Funding recently became available within the Department of Health for 700 patients to receive d-Nav; approximately 150 new patients have already begun using the service. The Trust also recently opened a direct GP referral pathway, meaning patients can have access to the d-Nav service through their primary physician without going through secondary care.

The adoption of d-Nav as a new standard of care followed a successful year-long evaluation in 2013 at the SEHSCT. Since then, the number of patients using the d-Nav service has grown continuously. The evaluation demonstrated that patients using d-Nav experienced a significant drop in average blood glucose (known as HbA1c), and delivered substantial reduction in diabetes care costs within 12 months. Patients’ average HbA1c decreased from 9.4 percent to 7.4 percent within three to six months, and more than 80 percent of patients have kept their HbA1c below 8 percent – many for as long as three years.

“I have been hugely impressed by the advances our Health and Social Care system is making, in many cases leading the way,” Simon Hamilton, Health, Social Services and Public Safety Minister for Northern Ireland, recently stated. “[These include] projects like d-Nav, where 700 type 2 diabetics on insulin treated in the South Eastern Trust will be using new technology which will ultimately result in a far more immediate, and effective, management of their diabetes than quarterly visits to outpatient clinics.”

Diabetes affects more than 80,000 people in Northern Ireland and costs the local economy approximately £400m per year. Inadequate blood glucose control has been shown to result in poor health – including significant short- and long-term complications - and higher prescription and healthcare costs.

“We created d-Nav because we believe insulin therapy should be easier for everyone involved,” said Eran Bashan, Hygieia CEO and co-founder. “Northern Ireland has embraced the potential of innovative healthcare technologies to provide better, more effective care for their patients at less cost. We are very proud to have partnered with the HSC to make d-Nav the new standard of care for their medical professionals and members with type 2 diabetes.”
