British scientists called on Friday for more research into the possibility that it is harmful for women to take folic acid supplements throughout pregnancy. Dr Andy Ness, of Bristol University in southern England, said preliminary results of a small study suggest that women taking high doses of folic acid in the later stages of pregnancy could be at an increased risk of breast cancer.
