IRVINE, Calif., Dec. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Edwards Lifesciences Corporation , a world leader in advanced cardiovascular technologies, announced the first recipients of grants from The Edwards Lifesciences Fund, a philanthropic fund the company established earlier this year. Grants were awarded to organizations supporting advancements in knowledge and improvements in quality of life, focusing primarily upon cardiovascular disease and the communities where Edwards’ employees live and work. Seventeen charitable organizations received grants, totaling nearly $644,000, as part of The Fund’s first grant cycle.
“We received many excellent proposals, and were gratified to be able to support 17 organizations in our first grant cycle,” said Laura Jackson, Edwards Lifesciences’ vice president of global communications. “The recipient organizations will help directly assist underserved patients fighting cardiovascular disease, and strengthen communities both in Orange County and globally.”
Nine grants were given in the Strategic category, which highlights causes that either expand awareness of cardiovascular disease, its prevention and treatment, or enhance support and access to care for under-served cardiovascular patients. A $100,000 grant was awarded to the Surgeons of Hope Foundation, Inc., which will use the monies to fund a humanitarian medical mission for indigent children in Cambodia.
St. Joseph Hospital Foundation in Orange, Calif. received $99,500 to fund their “From the Heart” program, providing community screening, education and treatment access for low-income, uninsured and/or minority at-risk patients in Santa Ana, Calif. and neighboring communities. Additional Strategic grants were given to Dare to Care Foundation, Children’s HeartLink, The Larry King Cardiac Foundation, Conemaugh Health Foundation, The HeartGift Foundation, St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, and the national Alliance for Aging Research.
The Edwards Lifesciences Fund also awarded eight Community grants in support of programs or projects that provided opportunities for Edwards employee involvement through volunteerism and contributions, or provided a significant opportunity to strengthen the community and improve the quality of life as a result of Edwards’ involvement. Organizations receiving Community grants included the American Heart Association: Orange County Division; Orangewood Children’s Foundation; Project Tomorrow; Camp del Corazon; Irvine Adult Day Health Services, Inc.; Discovery Science Center; Working Wardrobes for a New Start; and Goodwill Industries of Orange County.
