WALTHAM, Mass., Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Confluent Surgical, Inc., today announced that it has been recognized by Massachusetts Medical Device industry Council (MassMedic) as the joint recipient of the Nixon Peabody/Smith & Nephew Medical Device Innovation Award in the "Best Startup Company" category. Confluent was specifically recognized for having developed the DuraSeal(R) Dural Sealant System.
"We are pleased and honored to be recognized by MassMedic for their Medical Device Innovation Award. Since the FDA approval of DuraSeal Dural Sealant in April of this year, DuraSeal has been used in over 15,000 craniotomy procedures within six months of launch. DuraSeal sales continue to grow rapidly. The feedback from the surgeons using DuraSeal has been very complimentary," stated Amar Sawhney, Ph.D, Founder, President & CEO of Confluent Surgical, Inc.
Confluent recently announced the receipt of CE Mark for DuraSeal Sealant System in spinal, thoracic, and vascular applications thus extending the applicability of DuraSeal Sealant beyond cranial surgery. In the U.S. market, Confluent Surgical continues to embark upon clinical trials investigating other applications for DuraSeal.
"DuraSeal is on its way to becoming the standard of care for watertight dural closure in cranial surgery and fast expanding into multiple additional surgical disciplines. We are also envisioning using DuraSeal as a vehicle to deliver drugs locally. Our vision is to have Confluent's sealant and adhesion barrier products used universally in all surgical procedures," said Fred Khosravi, Chairman of Confluent Surgical.
Confluent Surgical continues to make steady progress with its other product, the SprayGel(R) Adhesion Barrier System for use in abdominal and pelvic open and laproscopic surgical procedures. The SprayGel device is commercially available in select international geographies and is in a clinical trial in the United States.
