MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jan. 26, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Marking a major milestone toward expanding the use of Stentriever technology for stroke patients, Concentric Medical, Inc., the global leader in acute ischemic stroke intervention, today announced that the first cases have been performed using its Trevo System in Canada. The Trevo System is an innovative, high-performing, easy-to-use system that utilizes Stentriever technology for the removal of clots that cause stroke. The Trevo Retriever is the first licensed retriever in Canada utilizing this technology.
On December 7, 2010, The Trevo System, which includes a Trevo device, Trevo 18 Microcatheter and DAC catheter, was licensed by Health Canada for stroke patients. The Trevo device was approved for thrombus retrieval. The DAC, previously approved as a distal support catheter, has now been approved for aspiration of thrombus in the neurovasculature. The Trevo System is now available to Canadian stroke centers.
Mayank Goyal, M.D., Clinical Professor, Department of Radiology, Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary Canada, was the first North American clinician to use the Trevo System. Upon completion of one of the first cases, Dr. Goyal said, “We treated an 82-year-old woman who presented with right hemiparesis and aphasia. CTA showed clot in the M2 division of the left MCA. Given the patient’s age and tortuosity, the new Trevo System was remarkably effective. I was able to achieve recanalization in a surprisingly short period of time. The Trevo was also very easy to use; this is key in being able to rapidly restore blood flow for patients suffering an acute ischemic stroke.”
Concentric Medical is the pioneer in developing devices for ischemic stroke intervention. Since 2004, Concentric Medical’s devices have been used in thousands of stroke patients worldwide. This experience has been incorporated into the design of the Trevo System to make thrombus removal an easier, faster and a more predictable procedure.
Maria Sainz, President and CEO of Concentric Medical, said, “The experience with the Trevo System in Canada and Europe is extremely encouraging. This technology represents an exciting opportunity for Concentric Medical, one that has the potential to greatly expand the treatment of stroke. We are committed to bringing innovative tools and clinical evidence to clinicians globally to drive the adoption of interventional treatment for stroke patients.”
Concentric Medical currently markets the Trevo System, the Merci Retriever®, Balloon Guide Catheters and the DAC family of catheters. These offerings represent an unparalleled array of choices for physicians involved in the treatment of ischemic stroke.

About Acute Ischemic Stroke
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the developed world and the leading cause of serious long-term disability. Ischemic stroke represents over 85% of strokes and occurs when a blockage or clot develops in one of the arteries supplying blood to the brain. In 2004 the FDA cleared Concentric Medical’s Merci Retriever for use in patients who are ineligible for IV-tPA or who fail to respond to IV-tPA therapy. This pioneering device created a departure from the historic method of caring for stroke patients and offered physicians and patients a long-awaited option for stroke intervention.
