CLEVELAND, March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Cleveland Clinic will host Innovations for Quality Measurement, a national symposium to address the latest trends for performance and quality measurement in healthcare, April 27-28. The summit takes place at the InterContinental Hotel & MBNA Conference Center Cleveland and is the first annual Leadership Summit hosted by the Clinic.
"Cleveland Clinic is proud to host this unique conference to discuss the measurement of healthcare outcomes and how these metrics can be used to produce high-quality outcomes," said Delos M. Cosgrove, M.D., CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic. "Moving forward, information and quality indicators for treatments and procedures will be critical to demonstrating value in healthcare and providing patients and other medical consumers with the substance they need to make informed choices. This summit will offer a timely and compelling program for this area of rapidly growing interest."
The Innovations for Quality Measurement summit is expected to draw decision makers from the private sector, state and federal governments, hospitals, and non-profit organizations to discuss the use of metrics in improving outcomes in America's $2 trillion healthcare sector. Among those scheduled to speak is University of Virginia business professor Elizabeth Olmsted Teisberg, Ph.D., who along with Harvard Business School professor Michael Porter, Ph.D., authored "Redefining Health Care: Creating Value-Based Competition on Results," a book due out in late May which outlines a prescription for creating value and improvements in healthcare. Advance copies of this book will be available for summit registrants.
Additional featured speakers for the Innovations for Quality Measurement Summit include: David Cutler, Ph.D., Harvard University; C. Martin Harris, M.D., M.B.A., Chief Information Officer and Chairman of the Information Technology Division at Cleveland Clinic; Glenn Hackbarth, J.D., Chairman, MedPAC; John Lumpkin, M.D., M.P.H., Senior Vice President, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; Henry A. McKinnell, Jr., Ph.D., Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer, Pfizer Inc.; Mark B. McClellan, M.D., Ph.D., CMS Administrator; James J. Mongan, M.D., President and CEO, Partners HealthCare; Thomas R. Russell, M.D., Executive Director, American College of Surgeons; and David Walker, Comptroller General of the U.S. Government Accountability Office.
"As pay-for-performance arrangements gain national attention for linking healthcare outcomes with financial compensation, measuring performance and healthcare quality will become critical," said Barry J. Smernoff, Ph.D., Assistant to the Chairman for Strategic Initiatives, Division of Clinical Research at Cleveland Clinic. "Without these metrics, there would not be an objective basis for making informed decisions on compensation."
