Celera Genomics is looking to sell its small-molecule drug development programs, a move that will leave 180 people without jobs. The Rockville-based biotechnology company is cutting one-third of its staff, reducing the work force from 540 people to approximately 360 employees. A Celera spokesman says only a small number of workers in Rockville will be affected by the layoffs, though he didn’t give an exact number. The company had more than 700 employees a few years ago. David Speechly, Celera’s senior director of corporate communications, says an overwhelming majority of the job cuts will take place in South San Francisco. “The impact is not large at all in Maryland,” he says.
