BOC Sciences-Recently scientists have isolated a new kind of pluripotent stem cells from the early mice embryo and from the stem cell lines of monkey and human. In developmental biologist Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmont’ s Paper in May 6 Nature, the result of the new finding was reported. Over the last several years, pluripotent stem cell research has been among the most exciting aspects of stem cell biology. It’s of great significance in the development of biology and medical science. Compared with the pulripotent cells isolated previously, it seems that the new one are more suitable for laboratory research.
According to the same study, the new stem cells have surprisingly high clonal efficiency as they can produce smaller teratoma. Anything that form smaller teratoma is potential to have a better safety profile in clinical application, which suggested that the new stem cells might be employed to model the early development of human, and be possible for them to generate tissues and organs for researches and clinic use in the future. The mouse teratoma assay is used in the standard functional test of the pluripotency human stem cells. It was the first demonstration that human stem cell can enter into the early developmental program of another species, but it still needs to be evaluated that if the new pluripotent stem cells can produce more complex tissue in other species.
A stem cell biologist pointed out that this study was not the first one to present new pluripotent cells, but such kind of studies are quite controversial since it’s not easy to culture the cells and independent labs have difficulties in duplicating the tests. Still, there are a great number of biologists agreeing on the potential of the newly identified pluripotent stem cells, as they are of great possibility to contribute to the development of laboratory researches and medical science to help save lives of millions from various incurable diseases. And many biologist hope that more new such stem cells can be found.
