IRVINE, CA--(Marketwired - July 30, 2013) - BIOLASE, Inc. (NASDAQ: BIOL), the world’s leading manufacturer and distributor of dental lasers, and a pioneer in laser surgery in other medical specialties, announced today that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”) has issued BIOLASE® a new patent for delivering sterile water. This new patent significantly expands on BIOLASE’s fluid conditioning system technology which is already covered in several issued U.S. patents. Currently, BIOLASE holds over 180 issued patents in the field of medical and dental laser technology, with several new patent applications pending world-wide.
U.S. Patent No. 8,485,818 is titled “Fluid Controller” and relates to a new controlled way of delivering sterile water within the fluid conditioning system of BIOLASE’s revolutionary WaterLase® systems. This technology will be used in both dental and medical cutting, irrigating, evacuating, cleaning and drilling operations. An additional important aspect of this new patent is the introduction of disinfectant agents via spray, mist, or water stream used for dental or surgical applications.
Dmitri Boutoussov, Vice-President of Research and Development commented, “The effectiveness and accuracy of WaterLase technology for clinical applications is critically dependent on the extremely precise control of the fluid flow. It is a core competency at BIOLASE and key area of differentiation for us over all other hard-tissue lasers in the market. It is challenging to precisely control fluids at very low flow levels. Inkjet printers and fuel injection systems are good examples of successful products in other industries. Our ability to meet these challenges expands our ability to leverage this technology into our targeted non-dental medical markets where the use of sterile fluids is mandatory.”
“Off-the-shelf solutions were not able to meet our exacting requirements, which motivated us to develop a whole new approach to precisely control fluid flow with an integrated sterile and disposable design. Success in practical implementation of our concept will open doors for new medical applications of our laser technology,” concluded Boutoussov.
Federico Pignatelli, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said, “This is an exciting patent for BIOLASE. This latest patented technology is a departure from conventional fluid flow control systems and is expected to advance the efficacy and safety of laser related surgical procedures where sterile fluids are required. Further, while the ability to use the WaterLase for dental and medical indications requiring a sterile water system is a major advance, our IP in this patent family also covers fluid conditioning with disinfectants, flavors, antibiotics and other conditioned fluid particles which hold promise for future applications.”
This is the fifth U.S. patent issued in relation to groundbreaking fluid conditioning laser technology with an additional U.S. patent application pending.
