Hackathon to be held at International Conference on Genomics in Shenzhen, China
Cambridge 20 October 2015 … Repositive, a software company developing novel tools to improve access to genomic research data, is hosting the first Asian Human Genome Hackathon, alongside GigaScience, DNAdigest, and OpenSNP.
The hackathon will consist of a workshop called, “How do I find human genomics data to power my research?” and a talk called “Hacking the human genome”.
The workshop will see experts from the organisers, alongside the China National Genebank, provide hands on training for researchers on how to get the most from a range of tools including openSNP, 1000 Genomes, Global Alliance Beacons and GigaDB.
In particular, the workshop will look at a number of issues with experts providing advice on issues such as finding hard to find research data, and how to better share data with the research community.
The talk which features Fiona Nielsen from Repositive and Bastian Greshake from OpenSNP will focus on a number of issues including what tools the non biologist hacker needs to get started, alongside the issues and challenges faced by bioinformatics. In addition to the event, there will be a prize draw which will see a lucky winner have their alcohol metabolism genes sequenced and presented through a series of genomic apps.
Fiona Nielsen, CEO of Repositive, said: “Through our partners we have pulled together an excellent event which will be of significant value to both beginners and more experienced bioinformaticians. Technology continues to advance and is making genomic advances an ever more important part of medical research. However, researchers are still facing challenges associated with identifying the best data for their research. Through conferences such as this, and the Repsoitive platform, we aim to break down those barriers and ensure that data that is consented for research use is easily findable and accessible for researchers.”
Repositive has developed a web based platform which will allow scientists to quickly and easily access data from a range of global sources, and initiate data collaborations with both colleagues and external collaborators. The Repositive platform is in beta testing and welcoming partners in academia and industry for genomics R&D.
