PEORIA, Ill. and BURLINGTON, Vt., June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- With a successful technology activation at the 254-bed OSF Saint Anthony’s Medical Center (Rockford, Ill.) earlier this month, OSF Healthcare System (OSF) is now live on IDX Carecast(TM) at five of its six hospitals located in Illinois and Michigan. The large healthcare organization -- which employs over 10,000 people and serves a population of 1.5 million in its six service areas -- is approaching a paperless environment through the use of Carecast, the enterprise clinical system provided by IDX Systems Corporation . OSF is deploying Carecast to support organization-wide electronic medical records and online charting by clinicians. In addition, the organization is deploying Carecast’s integrated patient accounting capabilities to support a clinically-automated revenue cycle by automatically creating billing information from clinical events.
“We’ve been especially pleased with the performance and benefits of our IDX technology. First, Carecast has consistently delivered subsecond response time while supporting thousands of simultaneous transactions. We average between 522,146 and 1,016,076 transactions a day and we measure Carecast average response times between .33 and .46 seconds,” said Michael Nauman, Chief Information Officer at OSF. “Second, our clinicians value the immediate, secure access to comprehensive patient information across our enterprise. Finally, Carecast’s integration of clinical, financial and administrative information is helping OSF to focus on reducing billing error rates.”
“I believe this system will help OSF improve patient safety and the quality of care,” commented Dr. John Whittington, OSF Director of Medical Informatics, in response to questions about the system’s impact on patient care. “For example, at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington, we are saving time and improving accuracy during medication administration by using Carecast’s autocharting features in combination with Pyxis medication dispensing technology from Cardinal Health. In our Pharmacy areas across our multiple facilities, Carecast’s rules and alerts features have been very beneficial and a contributing factor in increasing patient safety. We are now building the foundation to continue to make healthcare better and safer for all our patients.”
OSF St. Joseph Medical Center (Bloomington, Ill.), OSF Saint James -- John W. Albrecht Medical Center (Pontiac, Ill.), OSF St. Mary Medical Center (Galesburg, Ill.), OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center (Rockford, Ill.) and OSF St. Francis Hospital (Escanaba, Mich.) are currently live on Carecast.
OSF plans to activate its remaining facility, OSF Saint Francis Medical Center (Peoria, Ill.) in the fall of 2004. “The dedication of our MIS and facility staff, the collaboration of our clinical team, and our partnership with IDX have been essential to our success thus far and to our ongoing use of technology to improve the already high levels of patient care at OSF. This technology helps our community of caregivers provide the best quality and safety in patient care, supporting our mission of serving persons with the greatest care and love in a community celebrating the gift of life,” Nauman said.
