Medstat: Linking Outcomes Analysis And Clinical Best Practice Data Improves Performance

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Medstat, part of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC), today introduced enhanced content in Performance Expert, its clinical decision support system for healthcare providers. The product provides clinical and administrative leaders a management tool for simultaneously diagnosing the root cause of sub-optimal clinical outcomes and identifying medical best practices to improve performance.

Performance Expert now integrates DiseaseDex and DrugDex content, recognized clinical information resources from Thomson Micromedex, with Medstat’s clinically validated performance measurement methodology and data assets.

“We are excited about this new offering, which integrates Micromedex clinical content directly into our performance measurement solutions,” said Medstat Vice President Melinda Phillips. “Our customers now have seamless access to essential information necessary to drive better clinical decisions within the hospital.”

Including Micromedex clinical knowledge -- drug and disease information, clinical best practice guidelines, condition-specific FAQs, and patient education materials -- within Performance Expert and its patient safety application extends the system’s retrospective analysis capabilities. The resulting product allows clinical interventions at appropriate points in the clinical quality improvement cycle.

The new Performance Expert also includes Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MEDPAR) data and state level utilization data (where publicly available) to enable analysis of the Medicare population or comparisons of performance between in-state hospitals. “Examining more discreet populations provides deeper insights into conditions or treatment patterns that may be more prevalent in that population,” Phillips said. “Hospitals can then monitor performance against a wider range of peer groups, including competitors.”
