MINNETONKA, Minn., May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Charles Fazio, MD, has been appointed chief medical officer and senior vice president at Medica, Minnesota’s largest HMO and PPO.
Dr. Fazio previously was vice president and medical director of care and quality management at Medica. In recent years he led the implementation of Medica’s disease management programs; the introduction of acclaimed fitness programs that include incentives for exercise and a healthy diet; a major expansion of screening and preventive programs; and significant improvements in a variety of measures of quality of care and service delivered to Medica members.
As chief medical officer, Dr. Fazio has overall responsibility for the effectiveness of the clinical quality, care management, disease management, and population health programs at Medica. He also leads initiatives to reward physicians for improved quality of outcomes on behalf of Medica members, and to the development of performance and evidence-based incentives for improvements in care and efficiency.
Dr. Fazio’s nearly 25 years experience in clinical and administrative medicine includes service with the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement (ICSI) in Bloomington, Minnesota. At ICSI he oversaw the guideline development process, medical group operations and advised medical groups on infrastructure design and improvements. Earlier he was Medical Director at Central Minnesota Group Health Plan in St. Cloud, Minn.
Dr. Fazio has published and presented at many professional meetings and is a former recipient of a Bush Medical Fellowship. He is an NCQA reviewer and a member of the NCQA Review Oversight Committee.
