September 23, 2010 -- Bar Harbor, Maine -- Cortina Barnes, National President of the Ladies’ Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, was one of several LAVFW officials to visit The Jackson Laboratory today and present donations totaling $27,815 for cancer research.
Ms. Barnes joined Betty White, LAVFW representative from District #3 in Harrington, Maine; Yvonne Brooker, LAVFW Maine department president; Mike Hyde, Jackson Laboratory vice president for advancement and external relations; and other members, officials and employees of LAVFW and Jackson. The LAVFW’s national office donated $25,000, with an additional check in the amount of $2,815 provided by the Maine department.
The LAVFW President’s visit to the Laboratory has become an annual tradition, introducing LAVFW members to scientists whose work they have supported with cancer research grants. The LAVFW guests toured the Laboratory and heard about advances in cancer research from Jackson Assistant Professor Rick Maser and Associate Research Scientist Julie Wells. They also met with Jackson Laboratory employees who are veterans of the U.S. military.
On November 13, 1947, following the devastating forest fire that swept over Mount Desert Island and destroyed The Jackson Laboratory, the first donor to step forward with rebuilding funds was the Ladies’ Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, then led by National President Dorothy Mann.
To date the LAVFW has donated more than $1,000,000 to The Jackson Laboratory, the largest commitment from any service organization. Three buildings, countless pieces of research equipment, and funds for young investigators are among the initiatives they have funded through their Cancer Aid & Research Program.
The Jackson Laboratory is a nonprofit biomedical research institution based in Bar Harbor, Maine. Its mission is to discover the genetic basis for preventing, treating and curing human diseases, and to enable research and education for the global biomedical community.
