HealthAware Introduces Its VascularAware Cardiovascular Disease Module

DENVER, Feb. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- HealthAware, a leading supplier of innovative services to healthcare providers, announced today the launch of VascularAware, the newest disease module in its Cardiovascular Program. VascularAware is designed to help people who may be at risk for Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), which affects nearly 10 million adult Americans, according to the American Heart Association.

Development of the VascularAware disease module extends the Company’s mission of promoting early detection and prevention of disease.

“PAD affects eight to 12 million people in the U.S., and represents a significant growth market for hospitals,” says Greg Gossett, HealthAware President. “According to the Society of Interventional Radiology, PAD impacts 12 to 20 percent of those over age 65, and nearly 20 percent of all men and women age 70 and older.”

Mr. Gossett goes on to say, “Through VascularAware, we will be able to better help hospitals attain their goals, while also helping them to increase their visibility and goodwill within their communities.”

PAD is a form of atherosclerosis. The most common type of PAD is the hardening and narrowing of arteries that are caused by the gradual buildup of fatty deposits and additional substances. The result is restricted blood flow, mainly in the arteries that lead to the legs and extremities.

Many people with PAD have no symptoms, which is one reason why it is important to screen for this disease through VascularAware. About one third of those with PAD have symptoms in the form of leg pain, cramping, fatigue or other discomfort in the calves or hips when they are walking or engaged in other activity.

However, these symptoms typically will subside when they rest. Because of this, PAD can often go undiagnosed during its early stages because people mistake their symptoms for a form of arthritis or as simply a sign of aging.

By the time people with PAD begin to suffer from symptoms such as leg discomfort and pain, they may already have severely blocked arteries in their legs and damaged blood vessels in other parts of their body. This can put them at a higher risk for heart attacks and strokes.
