FNIH Release: The Coca-Cola Company Supports Two Fellowships With the U.S.-Russia Collaboration in the Biomedical Sciences Fellowship Program

BETHESDA, MD (July 27, 2012) – Two Russian scientists will have the opportunity to study at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) thanks to a generous donation made by The Coca-Cola Company. The U.S.-Russia Collaboration in the Biomedical Sciences Fellowship Program is managed by the Fogarty International Center (FIC) of the NIH and the Foundation for the NIH (FNIH).

The selected scientists will focus on active, healthy lifestyle research, including the roles of physical activity and energy balance during their two-year fellowship beginning in 2013.

“We believe building capability in this area of health science is key to ensuring active, healthy communities and a healthier public,” said Rhona Applebaum, PhD, vice president and chief scientific and regulatory officer of The Coca-Cola Company. “The Russian scientists who will be selected for these fellowships will receive expert training at the NIH. Providing this opportunity is just one example of our efforts to build capacity in this important area of science to help eradicate physical inactivity, which impacts the health and well-being of citizens around the world.”

The Fellowship Program will provide exceptional post-doctoral educational experiences in an NIH laboratory, enhancing the Fellow’s long-term career path; build long-term collaborations in science between the NIH and Russian scientists; and ensure the Fellows receive outstanding scientific mentorship at the NIH.

“We are delighted to welcome Russian scientists to the NIH campus for this wonderful opportunity to stimulate enduring research partnerships between our countries,” said Dr. Roger I. Glass, Fogarty director. “Since our populations share many of the same chronic health problems—heart disease, stroke, cancer and alcohol-related issues—by working together we hope to speed discoveries that will benefit everyone.”
